Reports of a toxic work environment have plagued Vice President Kamala Harris since she took up the post less than a year ago and the recently announced exodus of her chief spokesperson has only prompted more questions.

The White House said this week that senior adviser to the vice president and chief spokesperson Symone Sanders will be departing the vice president’s office by year’s end.

KAMALA HARRIS’ STAFFERS LEAVING WHITE HOUSE IN PART BECAUSE THEY FEAR BEING LABELED ‘HARRIS PERSON’: REPORT

“I love Symone, and I can’t wait to see what she will do next, and I know that it’s been a, you know, it’s been three years of a lot of jumping on and off planes and going around the country, and she works very hard, and I can’t wait to see what she’ll do next, and I mean that sincerely,” Harris told reporters this week.

But the vice president declined to comment when she was pressed on whether Sander’s departure was a part of a great internal shakeup.

“Well, I’ve told you how I feel about Symone. Next question,” Harris said.

Fox News contributor Joe Concha on Saturday called Harris’ office a “sinking ship” during commentary on Sanders’ departure.

“I guess when your boss’ approval ratings are at 28% and she’s polling even lower on her number one job, the U.S. southern border where migrants continue to flow over, two million passing over this year. I guess I would leave too, because this is a sinking ship,” said Concha.

Sanders’ decision to leave the vice president’s office not only raised eyebrows because she is the second high-level staffer to announce her bid farewell in less than a month, but because the spokesperson was previously harsh on vice president dropouts.

PSAKI DEFENDS HARRIS’ OFFICE AMID DEPARTURES, CITING ‘GRUELING’ WORK

Following reports of low morale in Harris’ office this summer, Sanders defended the reportedly toxic workplace and called individuals who anonymously spoke to the press “cowards.”

“People are cowards to do this, this way,” she told Politico in July. “We are not making rainbows and bunnies all day. What I hear is that people have hard jobs, and I’m like, ‘welcome to the club,’” Sanders said.

“We have created a culture where people, if there is anything anyone would like to raise, there are avenues for them to do so,” she added.

News that Ashley Etienne, Harris’ communications director, had resigned was also announced just one week before Thanksgiving. In addition, reports have surfaced this week that two other communications staffers – Peter Velz and Vince Evans – are also leaving Harris’ team, but those reports have not been confirmed by the White House.

White House officials maintain that the departures of several staffers does not signal that Harris is a bad boss.

Press secretary Jen Psaki said the White House has a history of seeing departures by high-level staffers and described the work as “grueling” when she was pressed by reporters on the work environment in the vice president’s office.

“Working on a presidential campaign…and working in the first year of a White House is exciting and rewarding, but it is also grueling and exhausting,” Psaki told reporters this week. “It’s all of those things at once.”

Fox News could not immediately reach the White House for comment.

The new, highly transmissible omicron variant of the coronavirus has been detected in Massachusetts for the first time, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health said Saturday.

The person is a woman in her 20s from Middlesex County who had traveled out of Massachusetts. She is fully vaccinated, had a mild case of COVID-19 and didn’t need to be hospitalized, officials said.

The variant had already been detected in several states across the country this week.

Evidence has shown omicron to be more transmissible than other COVID variants, and it’s been labeled a “variant of concern” by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, but the Department of Public Health noted Saturday that “scientists are still working to determine how it may compare with the predominant Delta variant in terms of transmissibility and disease severity.”

Omicron’s Spread in the US, Massachusetts

The first U.S. case of the omicron variant was detected on Wednesday in a vaccinated person who had flown from South Africa to California, top U.S. infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci announced. The variant was discovered a little over a week ago after being identified in South Africa, though earlier cases have been found in Europe.

More on the Omicron COVID Variant

Massachusetts’ first case of the variant was identified by genetic sequencing done at New England Biolabs, state health officials said.

The woman was not identified, and officials didn’t say where she had traveled out of state.

More than 10 states in the U.S. have reported omicron cases, including at least eight in New York State. No other states in New England have reported a case yet.

What Do We Know About the Omicron Variant?

This week, NBC10 Boston asked three top Boston doctors to answer some key open questions about the omicron variant as part of our weekly “COVID Q&A” series, including how worried we should be about the omicron variant and if its symptoms any worse than previous strains.

“I think we should be watchful, but not nervous,” said Dr. Daniel Kuritzkes, Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s chief of infectious disease. “President Biden said ‘This is cause for concern, but not for panic,’ which I agree with. There’s every reason to think that getting vaccinated and taking simple public health measures like continuing to wear a mask when in crowded situations indoors are going to be highly protective.”

All three doctors said they don’t expect symptoms from the omicron variant to differ much from the other strains, but they also said it’s too soon to know for sure.

“I’m not sure there are any major changes in sort of the array of symptoms associated with these viruses,” said Dr. David Hamer, an infectious disease specialist at Boston Medical Center. “One of the changes is if you become vaccinated and get a breakthrough case, you’re much more likely to have milder symptoms.”

Many experts, including Fauci, have said that existing COVID vaccines are expected to help prevent severe disease in people infected by omicron to at least some degree.

The mild nature of the California case is “testimony to the importance of the vaccinations,” California Health Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said Wednesday.

But among the evidence that the omicron variant may be more infectious than earlier mutations is recent research tracking reinfections in South Africa. Local scientists this week reported a jump in reinfections with the arrival of omicron that they hadn’t seen when two previous variants, including the extra-contagious delta variant, moved through the country.

The findings, posted online Thursday, are preliminary and haven’t yet undergone scientific review. Nor did the researchers say what portion of the reinfections were confirmed as omicron cases — or whether they caused serious illness.

But the timing of the reinfection spike suggests that omicron “demonstrates substantial population-level evidence for evasion of immunity from prior infection,” they wrote.

What started as an attempt to get rid of household pests ended with a million-dollar home going up in flames.

Last month, about an hour west of Baltimore, homeowners were trying to smoke out a snake infestation.

The coals were too close to combustible materials, and the fire that started in the basement quickly spread through each floor.

No one was injured in the fire, officials said — but the status of the snakes is unknown.

The house was recently purchased for $1.8 million and it sustained more than a million dollars in damage.

Fire officials recommend if you have a snake infestation in your home to call a professional and not try to take matters into your own hands.

“This is not how I want my time at CNN to end but I have already told you why and how I helped my brother,” Mr. Cuomo said in a statement on Saturday. “So let me now say as disappointing as this is, I could not be more proud of the team at ‘Cuomo Prime Time’ and the work we did as CNN’s #1 show in the most competitive time slot. I owe them all and will miss that group of special people who did really important work.”

The spectacle of a high-profile cable news anchor advising his powerful politician brother amid scandal was a longstanding headache for many CNN journalists, who privately expressed discomfort at actions that, in their view, compromised the network’s credibility. The CNN anchor Jake Tapper went public with his concerns in May, telling The New York Times that his colleague had “put us in a bad spot,” adding, “I cannot imagine a world in which anybody in journalism thinks that that was appropriate.”

Mr. Zucker, for a time at least, had stood behind Mr. Cuomo, saying the anchor was “human” and facing “very unique circumstances.” The network also offered the anchor a formal leave if he wished to work more closely with his brother’s team.

In the wake of Chris Cuomo’s suspension on Tuesday, CNN said it would embark on an internal review of his conduct, but the network made no immediate plans to retain an outside law firm or forensic investigators. The review was expected to focus on what ethical journalistic lines Mr. Cuomo may have crossed, according to a person familiar with the network’s plans.

Mr. Cuomo, previously at ABC News, was one of CNN’s first major hires after Mr. Zucker became its president in 2013. A morning show, “New Day,” was organized in part around Mr. Cuomo’s bombastic, fast-talking on-air personality. Mr. Cuomo also brought reportorial experience from his time covering wildfires, shooting rampages and war zones.

WASHINGTON – When the Supreme Court hands down its ruling next year in Mississippi’s blockbuster challenge to Roe v. Wade the bulk of the decision will be focused on interpreting what the Constitution says – or doesn’t say – about abortion.

But lurking just below the surface of that already fraught debate are questions about other rights experts say could be implicated if the high court overturns its landmark Roe decision, including access to contraception and the legality of same-sex marriage.

A homeowner in Maryland tried to fight a snake infestation with coal, only to burn their own house down, causing more than $1m in damage. Nobody was injured.

Montgomery county fire and rescue officials notified the public about the blaze right after it happened on 23 November, describing a conflagration that left a “large two-three-story single family house with heavy fire throughout structure and roof collapse”.

About 75 firefighters responded. Conditions were “dark and cold” – around -4C (25F) – as they battled the flames.

More than a week later, the department’s public information officer revealed more details. The cause was “accidental”, they said, specifically the “homeowner using smoke to manage snake infestation”.

Authorities believe the chosen heat source for the attempted serpent eradication was coals, which were located “too close to combustibles”. The fire’s area of origin was described as “basement, walls/floor”.

While uncommon, there have been other incidents in the US in which homeowners accidentally set fire to their homes while battling pests.

In 2017, a man destroyed most of his Georgia home when trying to “burn bees out of their nest”, the Associated Press reported.

The Humane Society of the United States says firefighters have repeatedly faced dangers from retrieving snakes, including an April 2013 incident in Thornton, Colorado.

Then, firefighters removed “more than 1,000 snakes and other reptiles from the basement of a home that was engulfed in flames”. Some of the creatures were described as aggressive, with some getting loose. The house was the location of Boas and Balls, a business selling snakes such as ball pythons and boa constrictors.

In Maryland, fire officials said: “Status of snakes undetermined.”

“We’ve been aware of Russia’s actions for a long time and my expectation is we’re going to have a long discussion,” Mr. Biden told reporters Friday night when asked about the possibility of Russia invading Ukraine.

A National Security Council spokesperson said on Friday night that the United States did not seek conflict with Russia and believed diplomacy was the best way to avert a crisis and prevent US.-Russian relations from spiraling further downward.

U.S. officials have hinted vaguely in recent days that they have specific reasons for their heightened concern about an invasion of Russia’s neighbor, a former Soviet republic that Mr. Putin considers a rightful part of Russia.

Speaking to reporters in Stockholm, Sweden on Thursday, Mr. Blinken referred to “evidence that Russia has made plans for significant aggressive moves against Ukraine.” Speaking to reporters on his official plane later that day, General Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, referred to “warnings from an intelligence standpoint,” saying “there’s enough out there now to cause a lot of concern.”

Mr. Blinken and other U.S. officials have been consulting with U.S. allies in Europe to devise retaliatory measures against possible Russian aggression against Ukraine, where Mr. Putin has long backed a pro-Moscow separatist insurgency and in 2014 annexed the Crimean Peninsula.

Mr. Blinken said this week that the United States would respond to “Russian aggression against Ukraine” with “high-impact economic measures that we’ve refrained from taking in the past,” but did not provide more details.

Mr. Blinken conveyed that warning during a Thursday meeting in Stockholm with Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov. But it is unclear whether Mr. Putin can be deterred by such threats.

Marty Boryszak is the senior vice president for acute care at Catholic Health, which operates five hospitals and a number of outpatient and in-patient treatment centers in Erie County. Last month it settled a contract after 2,500 workers went on strike. He said hospitals in Buffalo were reaching a critical stage. “We’re knocking on 100 percent, and it’s not over,” he said.

The state estimates that 33,000 health care workers, or just 3 percent of New York’s overall health care work force, left their jobs because of the vaccine mandate, which does not allow for testing in lieu of vaccination or religious exemptions. But because the sector as a whole was already short staffed, the additional job losses have hit hard. Ms. Hochul is being cautious about imposing additional mandates in other areas in light of the experience, she said Thursday at a news conference.

At F.F. Thompson Hospital, a rural hospital on the shores of Lake Canandaigua in the Finger Lakes, 15 people stayed overnight in the emergency room one night this week because there were no regular beds available, said Michael Stapleton, the hospital’s chief executive officer. As of earlier this week, less than one-quarter of the hospital’s 115 patients had Covid, but it was enough to overstress an already taxed facility.

For weeks, the hospital had been trying to discharge 17 stable patients to nursing homes, but could not find any space. One patient was recently transported by ambulance 300 miles to a nursing home bed in New York City, Mr. Stapleton said, the closest facility that had an opening. The patient, who had several chronic conditions, had been at the hospital for three months.

About 150 staff members left rather than comply with the state’s vaccine mandate, including people with decades of institutional knowledge, Mr. Stapleton said. Things got so bad that the week before Thanksgiving, the hospital diverted ambulances for two days to other hospitals just to relieve some of the pressure.

An ex-con was charged late Friday for an alleged stabbing rampage that left a Columbia University student dead, an Italian tourist wounded and a lawyer reeling from what he described to The Post as a terrifying, silent attack in Central Park.

Vincent Pinkney, 25, was awaiting arraignment on a slew of charges, including murder and attempted murder, for Thursday night’s bloodshed.

The 5-foot-5, 140-pound Manhattan man — a reputed gang member, according to law-enforcement sources — stayed mum as he was walked out of the NYPD’s 26th precinct in upper Manhattan Friday night and escorted to a waiting car by detectives.

At the vehicle’s open door, Pinkney, who wore a white Tyvek suit and mask, was asked by reporters if he had anything to say — and replied “yes” before standing silently.

He then continued to stand there for at least 30 seconds, staring down reporters and then shaking his head, until cops ushered him into the back of the car.

Vincent Pinkney is transported by police from the NYPD 26th precinct station in New York, NY on Dec. 3, 2021.

Pinkney is facing charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly stabbing graduate student Davide Giri, 30, in the stomach inside Morningside Park.

The Italian native, who was pursuing a Ph.D. in computer science, staggered out of the park and along West 123rd Street before collapsing near Amsterdam Avenue at around 10:50 p.m. Thursday. He was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Morningside hospital.

Pinkney is charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly attacking Italian tourist Roberto Malaspina about 20 minutes later.

Malaspina, 27, was stabbed in the back and the abdomen on West 110th near Columbus Avenue. He was recovering at Mount Sinai Morningside hospital.

Gregory Johnson witnessed the attack and alerted NYPD officers.

A police official said that a witness described the accused stabber as “jumping around — happy” after the attack.

“He told detectives he’d spent his time before the stabbings smoking weed,” the source told The Post.

Witnesses told cops that Malaspina’s assailant ran into Central Park, where lawyer Gregory Johnson, 30, said that a man came up behind him and his girlfriend as they were walking his dog, Peanut — and swung a kitchen knife at him without saying a word.

Stunned, Johnson yelled “f–k you” and the suspect yelled back “oh, f–k me?”

Johnson said he and his girlfriend flagged down cops outside the park and helped track down Pinkney, who sources said was caught with a white-handled boning knife with a 6-inch blade.

Pinkney was charged with attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the attack on Johnson.

Detectives have obtained video footage of Giri’s murder, in addition to the witness statements, according to sources.

The NYPD charged Pinkney with murder and attempted murder.
    Steven Hirsch

Officers collected DNA from under Pinkney’s fingernails, his clothing and the blade cops recovered when he was arrested.

Pinkney has been busted 11 times since 2012 on charges including robbery and assault, and was on supervised release from prison for beating a man and slashing his face in 2013.

The 25-year-old has reportedly been arrested 11 times since 2012 on charges including robbery and assault.
    Christopher Sadowski

He is also being investigated for the stabbing of another tourist — this one from Germany — fewer than 24 hours before Thursday night’s bloodshed, sources said.

Pinkney did not confess, and no possible motive for his alleged rampage has yet been provided.

“It’s entirely random and unprovoked,” a police source said. “There’s no conversation, there’s no anything. It’s the scariest type of crime because it could be anybody.”

The parents of the high-school sophomore accused of killing four classmates were found and arrested early Saturday, more than 12 hours after they were charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, law-enforcement officials said.

James and Jennifer Crumbley were captured in Detroit in a commercial building that contained artwork after local police received a tip that their vehicle had been spotted nearby, said Detroit Police Chief James E. White. He said police immediately set up a perimeter and began searching for the couple.

The parents of the high-school sophomore accused of killing four classmates were found and arrested hours after being charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said, ending a period of confusion during which police said the couple was missing and their lawyer said they intended to surrender.

James and Jennifer Crumbley were charged Friday in connection with the gun that their son is accused of using in Tuesday’s shooting at Oxford High School, Oakland County prosecutor Karen D. McDonald said. The father bought the gun, with the teen present at the purchase, days before the shooting, officials said.

NEW YORK, Dec 3 (Reuters) – A green massage table seized from Jeffrey Epstein’s Palm Beach estate was carried into a Manhattan federal courtroom on Friday, where British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell is on trial for her alleged role in the sex abuse of underage girls.

Prosecutors have said many of Epstein’s encounters with teenagers began as massages before escalating, calling the term “massage” a “ruse” to get girls to touch Epstein.

Maxwell, 59, has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of sex trafficking and other crimes for allegedly recruiting and grooming girls for Epstein to abuse.

Her attorneys argue she is being scapegoated because Epstein cannot be prosecuted, after killing himself in a Manhattan jail in 2019 at age 66 while awaiting trial on sex abuse charges. Maxwell is a former Epstein girlfriend.

Jeffrey Parkinson, a retired police officer involved in the 2005 search as part of an investigation into Epstein’s conduct, testified on the fifth day of Maxwell’s trial that he carried the massage table from Epstein’s estate.

Prosecutor Maurene Comey also showed jurors a photo of a box labeled “Twin Torpedos” that a colleague of Parkinson’s, Michael Dawson, said contained sex toys taken from an upstairs closet.

“We were looking for massage tables, we were looking for massage oils, we were looking for sex toys, we were looking for correspondence,” Dawson testified on Friday afternoon.

The demonstrations came after Epstein’s former house manager, Juan Alessi, completed his own testimony.

Alessi had testified on Thursday that Epstein was receiving about three massages every day by the time he left his job in 2002.

He said he sometimes found sex toys while cleaning the massage room and stored them in Maxwell’s bathroom.

Alessi called Maxwell the “lady of the house” at the Palm Beach property, saying she often directed him to schedule Epstein’s massages, and that he sometimes drove her on scouting missions to spas to find new therapists for Epstein.

A woman who identified herself as Jane testified this week that she frequently massaged Epstein at the Palm Beach home while she was a teenager in the mid-1990s.

She said Epstein often touched her sexually during their encounters, in which Maxwell sometimes participated. Epstein sometimes paid her, she added.

Alessi testified that Jane’s real name was in a directory he kept of Epstein’s masseusses. He also said that before Epstein and Maxwell arrived in Florida for the weekend, the house staff was instructed to place several $100 bills in Epstein’s cars.

Maxwell’s attorneys on Friday sought to challenge Jane’s recollection of the events when cross-examining Alessi.

They questioned his recollection of having met Jane in 1994, when she said she was first abused at 14, pointing to an earlier statement he made that he met her years later, when she might have been of legal age.

Alessi replied that he did not remember the precise year he met Jane.

Maxwell’s trial is expected to resume on Monday and last into January.

South African researchers did not have information on the severity of the first illness compared with the second. But the immune system should be able to prevent most severe symptoms in people who had a previous infection or have been immunized, Dr. Iwasaki said.

“I suspect, and I’m hopeful, that these aren’t all going to result in severe disease,” she said. “Maybe there are lots of infections, but they may be milder.”

The Gauteng province in South Africa is now the epicenter of what scientists say is the country’s fourth wave of infections. The week-on-week increase in hospital admissions is already higher than in previous waves, according to data from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases of South Africa.

“Gauteng was absolutely clobbered by the Delta wave only five months ago, so there’s no doubt that this variant is causing significant numbers of reinfections, due to that fact alone,” said Kristian Andersen, a virologist at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego.

The percentage of children younger than 5 among total cases has also risen sharply — second only to those over 60 — but that may be because more adults are immunized now than in previous waves.

Pediatricians are also admitting more children to hospitals, but mostly as a precautionary measure, said Dr. Waasila Jassat, a public health specialist at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases.

“Later in the wave, they wouldn’t meet the criteria for admission,” Dr. Jassat said. Most hospitalized children are unvaccinated, she said, and live with parents who have also not been immunized.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden pledged Friday to make it “very, very difficult” for Russia’s Vladimir Putin to take military action in Ukraine as U.S. intelligence officials determined that Russian planning is underway for a possible military offensive that could begin as soon as early 2022.

The new intelligence finding estimates that the Russians are planning to deploy an estimated 175,000 troops and almost half of them are already deployed along various points near Ukraine’s border, according to a Biden administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the finding.

It comes as Russia has picked up its demands on Biden to guarantee that Ukraine will not be allowed to join the NATO alliance.

The official added that the plans call for the movement of 100 battalion tactical groups along with armor, artillery and equipment.

Intelligence officials also have seen an uptick in Russian propaganda efforts through the use of proxies and media outlets to denigrate Ukraine and NATO ahead of a potential invasion, the official said.

Asked about the intelligence finding as he set out for the presidential retreat at Camp David on Friday evening, Biden reiterated his concerns about Russian provocations.

“We’ve been aware of Russia’s actions for a long time and my expectation is we’re gonna have a long discussion with Putin,” Biden said.

The risks of such a gambit for Putin, if he actually went through with an invasion, would be enormous.

U.S. officials and former U.S. diplomats say while Putin clearly is laying the groundwork for a possible invasion, Ukraine’s military is better armed and prepared today than in past years, and the sanctions threatened by the West would do serious damage to Russia’s economy. It remains unclear if Putin intends to go through with what would be a risky offensive, they say.

Earlier Friday, Biden pledged to make it “very, very difficult” for Putin to take military action in Ukraine and said new initiatives coming from his administration are intended to deter Russian aggression.

“What I am doing is putting together what I believe to be will be the most comprehensive and meaningful set of initiatives to make it very, very difficult for Mr. Putin to go ahead and do what people are worried he may do,” Biden told reporters.

The Kremlin said Friday that Putin would seek binding guarantees precluding NATO’s expansion to Ukraine during the call with Biden. But Biden sought to head off the demand.

“I don’t accept anyone’s red line,” Biden said.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials also warned that Russia could invade next month. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov told lawmakers Friday that the number of Russian troops near Ukraine and in Russia-annexed Crimea is estimated at 94,300, warning that a “large-scale escalation” is possible in January. U.S. intelligence officials estimate closer to 70,000 troops are deployed near the border, according to an unclassified intelligence document obtained Friday by The Associated Press.

The intelligence findings were first reported by The Washington Post.

There are signs that the White House and Kremlin are close to arranging a conversation next week between Biden and Putin. Putin’s foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov told reporters Friday that arrangements have been made for a Putin-Biden call in the coming days, adding that the date will be announced after Moscow and Washington finalize details. The Russians say a date has been agreed upon, but declined to say when.

Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have also tentatively agreed to have a call next week, according to a person close to the Ukrainian president who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said administration officials have “engaged in the possibility” of a Biden-Putin call. White House officials did not respond to a request for comment on the expected Zelenskyy call.

“It certainly would be an opportunity to discuss our serious concerns about the bellicose rhetoric, about the military buildup that we’re seeing on the border of Ukraine,” Psaki said of a potential Biden-Putin call.

Biden did not detail what actions he was weighing. But Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who met Thursday with Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Sweden, said the U.S. has threatened new sanctions. He did not detail the potential sanctions but suggested the effort would not be effective.

“If the new ‘sanctions from hell’ come, we will respond,” Lavrov said. “We can’t fail to respond.”

Psaki said the administration would look to coordinate with European allies if it moved forward with sanctions. She noted that bitter memories of Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula that had been under Ukraine’s control since 1954, are front of mind as the White House considers the way forward.

“We know what President Putin has done in the past,” Psaki said. “We see that he is putting in place the capacity to take action in short order.”

Deep differences were on display during the Blinken-Lavrov meeting, with the Russia official charging the West was “playing with fire” by denying Russia a say in any further NATO expansion into countries of the former Soviet Union. Zelenskyy has pushed for Ukraine to join the alliance, which holds out the promise of membership but hasn’t set a a timeline.

Blinken this week said the U.S. has “made it clear to the Kremlin that we will respond resolutely, including with a range of high-impact economic measures that we’ve refrained from using in the past.”

He did not detail what sanctions were being weighed, but one potentially could be to cut off Russia from the SWIFT system of international payments. The European Union’s Parliament approved a nonbinding resolution in April to cut off Russia from SWIFT — the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications — if its troops entered Ukraine.

Such a move would go far toward blocking Russian businesses from the global financial system. Western allies reportedly considered such a step in 2014 and 2015, during earlier Russian-led escalations of tensions over Ukraine.

Then-Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said it would be tantamount to “a declaration of war.”

But some U.S. government officials say Putin also could be seeking attention and concessions from Biden and other Western leaders, using the military escalation to force Russia back into a central role in world affairs as it had in the days of the Soviet Union.

“They are seriously envious for superpower status and … the parity to the United States that existed during the Cold War. That’s what this is all about,” said John Herbst, a former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine.

An invasion is possible, but more likely, “they provoke a crisis, they get concessions from us, and then they reduce the crisis. Right? And that, I think, is probably their objective,” Herbst said Friday.

Actress Sarah Silverman took aim at MSNBC host Joy Reid for sounding the alarm on Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for a proposal for a civilianmilitary force in his state.

DeSantis introduced a plan to re-establish what’s called the Florida State Guard that can quickly aid the response to hurricanes and other emergencies. Several other states across the country including New York and California have similar civilian forces.

DEBRA MESSING BLASTS MEDIA FOR DOWNPLAYING WAUKESHA PARADE ATTACK AS AN ‘ACCIDENT’

“We want to make sure that we have the flexibility and the ability needed to respond to events in our state in the most effective way possible. That will require us to have access and be able to use support in ways that are not encumbered by the federal government or don’t require federal government,” DeSantis said Thursday. “So I’m going to be recommending in the budget $3.5 million to re-establish the Florida State Guard. The Florida State Guard will act as a civilian volunteer force that will have the ability to assist the National Guard and state-specific emergencies.”

However, despite how common it is for states to create their own civilian military force, news outlets suggested DeSantis is tapping into authoritarian impulses.

CNN’s homepage, for example, was dominated Friday morning with the headline, “DeSantis proposes new civilian military force,” something the liberal outlet stressed, “he would control.”

“Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wants to reestablish a World War II-era civilian military force that he, not the Pentagon, would control,” the CNN article began. “But in a nod to the growing tension between Republican states and the Biden administration over the National Guard, DeSantis also said this unit, called the Florida State Guard, would be ‘not encumbered by the federal government.’ He said this force would give him ‘the flexibility and the ability needed to respond to events in our state in the most effective way possible.’”

It wasn’t until the fourth paragraph that CNN acknowledged that Florida would be the 23rd state to establish such a force.

SARAH SILVERMAN SLAMS DEM ‘SQUAD’ FOR OPPOSING ISRAEL’S IRON DOME: ‘NONE OF THEM TALK ABOUT HAMAS!’

But that didn’t stop CNN’s story from going viral and was shared by several liberal media personalities including the “ReidOut” host.

“So… y’all know this is fascisty bananas, right…?” Reid tweeted.

Silverman, an outspoken liberal, pushed back at the MSNBC star’s hyperbolic remark.

“Please read the article before you post this stuff you’re a news outlet. The truth has to matter,” Silverman told Reid.

Reid was far from the only one expressing sheer panic over DeSantis’ proposal.

“WOW: GOP Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis wants to form a personal militia like the ‘political’ leaders in Iraq have. It would be a militia that only answers to him. This is the beginning of a ‘Red Army’ as the GOP prepares for war. Literally,” liberal SiriusXM radio host Dean Obeidallah reacted to the CNN report.

“‘And that, children, was the genesis of Florida’s nuclear weapons program,'” Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson wrote

“So…fascism,” Daily Beast columnist Wajahat Ali tweeted.

“What wannabe totalitarian, fascist, authoritarian dictators do,” MSNBC analyst Fernand Amandi similarly wrote

CNN HEAVILY PROMOTED REBEKAH JONES’ FAKE CONSPIRACY ACCUSING DESANTIS ADMIN OF ALTERING COVID DATA

“i can never figure out how much of this is serious and how much is desantis just trying to get a headline to use to trigger the libs,” New York Times opinion columnist Jamelle Bouie tweeted

Other outlets ran stories similar to CNN like Axios’ “DeSantis proposes Florida civilian military force that he’d control,” The Hill’s “DeSantis proposes civilian Florida State Guard military force he would control” and The Guardian’s “Ron DeSantis plans Florida paramilitary force outside federal control.”

MSNBC’s “The ReidOut Blog” went even further attacking the GOP governor with a piece titled, “DeSantis wants Florida to establish its own military force. He can’t be trusted.”

A spokesperson for Gov. DeSantis blasted the liberal media’s coverage of his proposal.

“Today, ‘DeSantis’ was trending on Twitter alongside ‘Gestapo.’ This is a result of sensationalist false narratives pushed by irresponsible journalists,” DeSantis Press Secretary Christina Pushaw told Fox News. “The fact is that 22 other states already have a State Guard, like proposed for Florida. Calling them ‘Gestapo’ is disrespectful, not only to the service members who assist states in emergencies, but also to victims of the actual Gestapo.”

Corporate media’s super-spreaders of disinformation are desperate to score cheap political points against Governor DeSantis, but they aren’t fooling Floridians. Florida is the freest state in the country, because we have a governor who fights to defend our constitutional rights – even in the face of an unprecedented onslaught from the Biden Administration. Protecting citizens’ freedom to live their lives and make their own choices, as Governor DeSantis does, is the opposite of dictatorship,” Pushaw added.

Some of CNN anchor Chris Cuomo’s Republican foes had sharp words for the liberal host after he was indefinitely suspended this week by the scandal-plagued network.

Cuomo was reprimanded after evidence of his extensive involvement in his brother Andrew Cuomo’s political operations amid sexual harassment allegations was too much for CNN to ignore. The “Cuomo Prime Time” host used his media connections to investigate his brother’s accusers and other reporters delving into the former New York governor’s scandals.

“Just when you think CNN’s reputation couldn’t get any lower, it does,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, told Fox News Digital in a statement.

With more Republicans in the Donald Trump era making media criticism a cornerstone of their communications efforts, several prominent lawmakers had an opinion on Cuomo’s suspension, which will continue as CNN investigates his behavior.

MARIA BARTIROMO RIPS CNN FOR ALLOWING CUOMO ‘BRO-SHOW SCHMOOZE FEST’ TO GO ON

Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., who repeatedly clashed with former Gov. Cuomo while he was in office, said CNN should terminate the younger Cuomo immediately. She previously criticized CNN for allowing him to interview his brother multiple times without properly pressing him on his COVID-19 policies.

“There is a reason CNN’s viewership is at an embarrassing historic low,” she told Fox News Digital. “It’s because they have pushed propaganda, misinformation, and conspiracy theories like the Steele dossier, messaging from the Chinese Communist Party, and [Andrew] Cuomo’s coronation. Chris Cuomo needs to be fired immediately. CNN has zero credibility to salvage.”

ANDREW CUOMO UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION OVER SEXUAL HARASSMENT CLAIMS

After he “weaponized his media sources,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., said, Cuomo had proved he wasn’t really a journalist.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, R., often contrasted in the media with Gov. Cuomo over their different approaches to the coronavirus in their large states, was critical of media elevation of him in 2020 he claimed was meant to damage him and then-President Trump.

“Chris Cuomo himself often had Andrew Cuomo on his CNN show to promote disastrous [New York]’s pandemic response and give Andrew Cuomo a platform to boost his unwarranted image as a crisis manager,” DeSantis spokeswoman Christina Pushaw told Fox News Digital.

In its announcement of Cuomo’s suspension, CNN appeared to suggest Cuomo had misled it over the depth of his role as an adviser and aide, while anchoring its most-watched show. It remains unclear who will conduct the review of Cuomo and what his ultimate fate will be at CNN.

“The New York Attorney General’s office released transcripts and exhibits Monday that shed new light on Chris Cuomo’s involvement in his brother’s defense. The documents, which we were not privy to before their public release, raise serious questions. When Chris admitted to us that he had offered advice to his brother’s staff, he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly. But we also appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first and job second. However, these documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew. As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation.”
