Fauci warns against potential new COVID-19 surge as cases remain high – CBS News

Washington — Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief medical adviser to President Biden, warned Sunday the nation could be at risk of a new surge of COVID-19 infections as the number of daily cases in the U.S. has remained at a plateau.

“When you’re coming down from a big peak and you reach a point and start to plateau, once you stay at that plateau, you’re really in danger of a surge coming up,” Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in an interview with “Face the Nation.” “And unfortunately, that’s what we’re starting to see.”

While the nation experienced a sharp decline in coronavirus cases from January to early March, the number of daily new infections has hovered between roughly 50,000 and 60,000, according to data from the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC). On Friday, the number of new cases reached 71,593, as 30 states and the District of Columbia reported a rise in infections.

A leveling-off at such a high rate of infection is “a risk,” Fauci said.

While new coronavirus variants identified in the United Kingdom and South Africa are “playing a part” in the spikes of new cases, Fauci said, an increase in travel for spring break and rolling back of mitigation methods have also contributed.

“Several states have done that. I believe it’s premature,” he said of lifting measures such as mask mandates.

The rising COVID-19 infections comes amid the Biden administration’s efforts to accelerate the pace of coronavirus vaccinations. To more quickly deliver shots into the arms of Americans, the federal government has begun supplying vaccine doses directly to pharmacies and community health centers, and last week announced a $10 billion commitment to ensure the vaccines are being distributed equitably. 

President Biden announced Thursday he doubled the nation’s goal of vaccinations within his first 100 days in office to 200 million doses. The U.S. is now administering between 3 and 3.5 million vaccines daily, and 140 million doses total have been administered, according to the CDC. More than 27% of the entire U.S. population has received at least one dose of their COVID-19 vaccines — vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna require two shots, while Johnson & Johnson’s requires just one.

Fauci said that if the U.S. continues at a pace of more than 3 million daily doses administered, “invariably that’s going to drive the rate and the level of infections per day to a much, much lower level.”

“If we get into the summer and you have a considerable percentage of of the population vaccinated and the level in the community gets below that plateau that’s worrying me and my colleagues in public health, it is conceivable that you would have a good degree of flexibility during the summer, even with the children, with things like camps,” he said. “We don’t know that for sure, but I think that’s an aspirational goal that we should go for.”

Fauci predicted that there will be an incremental easing of some coronavirus restrictions heading into the late spring and early summer as more Americans receive their vaccines.

“There are 50 million people in this country that are fully vaccinated. That’s a lot of people. And every day we get more and more,” he said. “I would expect that as we get through the summer, late spring, early summer, there’s going to be a relaxation where you’re going to have more and more people who will be allowed into baseball parks, very likely separated with seating, very likely continuing to wear masks. As we get a really, really low level of infection, you’re going to start seeing a pulling back on some of those restrictions, I hope. And I think that’s going to happen. I think if we do it correctly and we get the vaccines out at the rate we’re doing, that will happen.”

Salem Police arrested at least three people and urged others to stay away from Oregon’s State Capitol building Sunday evening as violence linked to Antifa-aligned protesters broke out.

The “heavily armed” crowd had grown to as many as 200 people, Fox 12 Portland reported. The chaos unfolded as a planned right-wing protest and Antifa counter-protest were scheduled in Salem for the same day.

Police received reports of vehicles driving past the Capitol being struck with balloons filled with paint as well as green lasers being pointed at drivers.

Videos shared by independent journalist Andy Ngo show that one vehicle had its window smashed out while another protester was nearly run over by a truck. Ngo said the protesters were Antifa, noting that they brought their flag as well as weapons and riot gear.  

Police issued an audible warning to protesters that they are participating in an unpermitted event and blocking Court Street. 

“Exit the roadway and obey all laws,” they said. “Failure to do so may result in arrest. Stay on the sidewalks and exit the roadway.”

Oregon State Police and the Salem Police Department’s crowd management teams moved protesters away from the scene.

Police declared the protest an “unlawful assembly” and formed a line in front of the Capitol.

One person arrested by police allegedly had pulled out a gun.

“Due to activities expected at the @OregonCapitol today be aware there may be pedestrian congestion in the area,” authorities said in a Twitter thread. “If poss[ible], avoid traveling thru streets around the capitol mall. Anyone observing criminal behavior should immediately move to a safe location & call 9-1-1.”

“The risk of violence has increased as the opposing protestors are expected to arrive in large numbers,” police added. “We are advising residents/visitors to avoid the capitol mall area. For those in the area, please remain cautious/aware given the circumstances.”

Authorities said that the department, along with Oregon State Police and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, would be monitoring the situation and that they were “prepared to act in the interest of the public’s safety.”

Thousands flee Myanmar airstrikes, complicating crisis – Associated Press

MAE SAKOEP, Thailand (AP) — Thai soldiers began sending back some of the thousands of people who have fled a series of airstrikes by the military in neighboring Myanmar, people familiar with the matter said Monday. But Thai officials denied that as the insecurity on the border added a new dimension to an already volatile crisis set off by a coup in Myanmar.

The weekend strikes, which sent ethnic Karen people seeking safety in Thailand, represented another escalation in the violent crackdown by Myanmar’s junta on protests of its Feb. 1 takeover. On Saturday, more than 100 people were killed in and around demonstrations throughout the country — the bloodiest single day since the takeover.

The violence by the Myanmar military — both on the border and in cities around the country — raised the question of whether the international community would respond more forcefully than it has thus far to a coup that ousted the government led by Aung San Suu Kyi and reversed years of progress toward democracy.

In response to reports of people fleeing the airstrikes, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha had said earlier Monday that the country didn’t want “mass migration” but that it was preparing for an influx of people and would take human rights issues into consideration.

But later, three people with knowledge of the matter said Thai soldiers had begun to force people to return to Myanmar.

“They told them it was safe to go back even though it is not safe. They were afraid to go back but they had no choice,” said a spokesperson for the Karen Peace Support Network, a group of Karen civil society organizations in Myanmar.

Two other people confirmed that refugees were being sent back to Myanmar. All three spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the issue.

A spokesman for Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, however, said claims that some Karen were being forced to return to Myanmar were “inaccurate.”

“Those reports cite information solely from non-official sources without confirming the facts from official sources on the ground. … In fact, the Thai authorities will continue to look after those on the Thai side while assessing the evolving situation and the needs on the ground,” Tanee Sangrat wrote in a statement.

In one border area, Thai soldiers refused to let journalists or curious locals approach or speak to those who had fled.

Myanmar aircraft carried out three strikes overnight Sunday, according to Dave Eubank, a member of the Free Burma Rangers, a humanitarian relief agency that delivers medical and other assistance to villagers. The strikes severely injured one child but caused no apparent fatalities, he said.

Earlier strikes had sent about 2,500 people into northern Thailand’s Mae Hong Son province and left at least four people dead and many wounded, according to the agency.

One witness described a “chaotic scene” as he watched hundreds of people cross the river border Sunday into Mae Hong Son.

“There were many children and women. It seemed like they had basic supplies to sustain themselves, but I don’t know how long they can last without help,” said La Rakpaoprai, who buys snacks and other goods in the mountainous border village of Mae Sakoep and sells them in remote areas.

Video shot Sunday showed a group of villagers, including many young children, resting in a forest clearing inside Myanmar after fleeing their homes. They carried their possessions in bundles and baskets. In addition to those who have fled to Thailand, an estimated 10,000 people are believed to be displaced inside Myanmar’s northern Karen state, according to the Free Burma Rangers.

The bombings may have been in retaliation for a reported attack by the Karen National Liberation Army in which they claimed to have captured a Myanmar government military outpost on Saturday morning. The group is fighting for greater autonomy for the Karen people.

According to Thoolei News, an online site that carries official information from the Karen National Union, eight government soldiers were captured and 10 were killed. The report said one Karen guerrilla died.

The government has battled the Karen fighters on and off for years — as it has with other ethnic minorities seeking more autonomy — but the airstrikes are a worrying development at a time when the junta is also violently suppressing anti-coup protests in cities across the country.

As of Sunday, at least 459 people have been killed since the takeover, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners. The true toll is though to be higher.

On Saturday alone, at least 114 people across the country were killed by security forces, including several children — a toll that prompted a U.N. human rights expert to accuse the junta of committing “mass murder” and criticize the international community for not doing enough to stop it.

U.S. President Joe Biden told reporters his administration is working on a response but offered no details. The United States has already levied new sanctions on the junta, as have other countries — but they have had little effect so far.

“It’s terrible. It’s absolutely outrageous. Based on the reporting I’ve gotten, an awful lot of people have been killed. Totally unnecessary,” Biden said.

The U.N. Security Council is likely to hold closed consultations on the escalating situation in Myanmar, diplomats said Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to release the information ahead of an official announcement. The council has condemned the violence and called for a restoration of democracy, but has not yet considered possible sanctions against the military, which would require support or an abstention by Myanmar’s neighbor and friend China.

Despite the violence by security forces, protests have continued, and many used funerals of those killed on Saturday to show their resistance to the coup.

In Yangon, the country’s largest city, friends and family gathered Monday to say farewell to 49-year-old Mya Khaing, who was fatally shot on Saturday. As his coffin was moved toward the crematorium, mourners sang a defiant song from an earlier 1988 uprising against military rule.

“There is no pardon for you till the end of the world,” the mourners sang. “We will never forgive what you have done.”

However, the first arguments it will hear in an abortion-related case won’t address restrictions on the procedure. At the same time, the court for months has been delaying a decision on whether to take up a direct challenge to Roe — a Mississippi ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, which lower courts have blocked.

The Kentucky case: The case, Cameron v. EMW Women’s Surgical Center, concerns Kentucky’s 2018 ban on a common method of surgical abortion used after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The law was signed by the previous Republican governor, Matt Bevin, but was blocked by lower federal courts.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, a Republican, is seeking to defend the law in court after Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear’s administration refused. The 6th Circuit rejected Cameron’s request, prompting him to appeal to the Supreme Court for the right to intervene.

Cameron has also asked the justices to reconsider the constitutionality of the Kentucky law in light of a recent Supreme Court that conservatives believe could pave the way for more limits on the procedure. Though a narrowly divided Supreme Court in that case, June Medical v. Russo, struck down a Louisiana law regulating abortion clinics, Chief Justice John Roberts’ concurring opinion signaled that federal courts could uphold abortion restrictions that had no medical justification as long as they weren’t overly burdensome to patients.

However, the court said it would only hear arguments on the more narrow procedural question of whether Cameron could intervene in the case and not whether the 6th Circuit ruling should be vacated.

What it could mean: If the justices side with Cameron, it could open the door for more state officials to defend abortion laws when their governors choose not to so. A hearing in the case will likely be held later this year.

The mammoth cargo ship blocking one of the world’s most vital maritime arteries was wrenched from the shoreline and set partially afloat again early on Monday morning, raising hopes that traffic could soon resume in the Suez Canal and limit the economic fallout of the disruption.

Salvage teams, working on both land and water for five days and nights, were ultimately assisted by forces more powerful than any of the machines that rushed to the scene to assist in the rescue: the moon and the tides.

As water levels swelled overnight, the hours spent digging and excavating millions of tons of earth around the Ever Green paid dividends as the ship slowly regained buoyancy, according to officials.

While shipping officials and the Egyptian authorities cautioned that the complicated operation was still underway, they expressed increasing confidence the ship would soon be completely free.

The stern was now some 300 feet from shore, according to the Suez Canal Authority. While the ship was moving, what remained unclear was if the bulbous bow — the protruding bulb at the bow — is totally clear of dirt and debris.

The next high tide will peak at 11:42 a.m. local time, and crews will continue maneuvers as the water rises, according to the authority.

Images on social media showed tugboat crews celebrating their progress in the predawn hours.

It appeared to be the culmination of one of the largest and most intense salvage operations in modern history, with the smooth functioning of the entire global trading system hanging in the balance.

Each day the canal was blocked put global supply chains another day closer to a full-blown crisis.

Vessels packed with the world’s goods — including cars, oil, livestock and laptops — usually flow through the waterway with ease, supplying much of the globe as they traverse the quickest path from Asia and the Middle East to Europe and the East Coast of the United States.

With concerns the salvage operation could take weeks, some ships decided not to wait, U-turning to take the long way around the southern tip of Africa, a voyage that could add weeks to the journey and cost more than $26,000 a day in fuel costs.

The army of machine operators, engineers, tugboat captains, and other salvage operators knew they were in a race against time.

Late Saturday, tugboat drivers sounded their horns in celebration of the most visible sign of progress since the ship ran aground late Tuesday.

The 220,000-ton ship moved. It did not go far — just two degrees, or about 100 feet, according to shipping officials. That came on top of progress from Friday, when canal officials said dredgers had managed to dig out the rear of the ship, freeing its rudder.

By Saturday afternoon, they had dredged 18 meters down into the canal’s eastern bank. But officials cautioned that the ship’s bow remained firmly planted in the soil and that the operation still faced significant hurdles.

The company that oversees the ship’s operations and crew, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, said 11 tugboats were helping, with two joining the struggle on Sunday. Several dredgers, including a specialized suction dredger that can extract 2,000 cubic meters of material per hour, dug around the vessel’s bow, the company said.

The ship’s manager said that in addition to the tugboats and dredgers, high-capacity pumps will draw water from the vessel’s ballast tanks to lighten the ship.

Salvagers were determined to free the vessel as the spring tide rolled in, raising the canal’s water level as much as 18 inches, analysts and shipping agents said.

It was a delicate mission, with crews trying to move the ship without unbalancing it or breaking it apart.

With the Ever Given sagging in the middle, its bow and stern both caught in positions for which they were not designed, the hull is vulnerable to stress and cracks, according to experts. Just as every high tide brought hope the ship could be released, each low tide puts new stresses on the vessel.

Teams of divers have been inspecting the hull throughout the operation and have found no damage, officials said. It would need to be inspected again once it was completely free.

And it would take some time to also inspect the canal itself to ensure safe passage. With hundreds of ships backed up on either side, despite promises from the authorities to quickly clear the backlog, it could be days before operations return to normal.

The Biden administration is putting out a call for government volunteers to report for duty amid the significant surge at the border, but many are asking — where is the person deputized to ‘fix’ the line in the sand crisis? 

As the immigration mess at the southern border gets more and more out of hand, Vice President Kamala Harris still remains inexplicably silent.

Even after President Biden officially tapped the VP Wednesday to lead in response to border challenges, there aren’t any plans for her to travel south or even address the issue. According to the Office of the Vice President, Harris had no events this past weekend and no mention of border-related activity.

This comes as the Biden administration is now asking for government volunteers to help manage the migrant surge. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has sent memos to agency heads seeking “volunteer deployments” for up to 120 days, Fox News confirmed.

“We are actively working to screen, process and deploy these volunteers while continuing our recruitment efforts and exploration of other avenues to bolster staff resources at the border,” an OPM spokesperson said.

Meantime, while government officials are preparing to volunteer their time to help keep our borders safe, according to CNN, Harris is currently frustrated with the ongoing renovations being made to the vice president’s mansion – forcing her and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff to temporarily stay at Blair House, the president’s official guest quarters.

The administration provided no explanation for renovation delays, leading to the vice president having to reportedly live “out of suitcases” while the nation questions why she hasn’t packed those bags for a border visit.

Harris, in fact, laughed while responding to a question from a reporter Monday who asked if she’d be heading south soon. She replied with what some called a cackle, “Not today.”

The VP’s communications director Ashley Etienne accepted Fox’s phone call but refused to answer questions over the phone. Instead, she told Fox News to email her and she would respond. But as of Sunday evening, still no response.

The White House also did not respond following request for comment.

A looming question is whether Chauvin, charged with murder and manslaughter, can get a fair trial with so much pressure on jurors and with some potentially fearing the consequences to the city and country should they reach a verdict others oppose.

A high fence installed around the courthouse for the trial is a daily reminder for jurors of security concerns. On some days, protesters gathered just beyond it, holding signs that read, “Convict Derek Chauvin” and “The World Is Watching.”

Jurors are well aware that Floyd’s death led to months of protests in Minneapolis and cities nationwide. They’re aware, too, that thieves took advantage of demonstrations to break into, ransack and sometimes burn down stores.

A judge denied a request to change the trial’s venue, a ruling Chauvin could cite on appeal if convicted. Appeals with change-of-venue disputes at their core are rare but not unprecedented.

A U.S. appeals court in 1999 vacated white Detroit police officer Larry Nevers’ conviction in the beating death of a Black motorist, even though evidence against him seemed strong. The court noted how at least one juror heard that the National Guard was on standby in case Nevers was acquitted and violence ensued.

“The Court cannot imagine a more prejudicial extraneous influence than that of a juror discovering that the City he or she resides in is bracing for a riot,” it said. It added that letting the conviction stand would send the wrong message that rights to an impartial jury “do not extend to an obviously guilty defendant.”

Similarly, an appeals court in Florida tossed the conviction and ordered a new trial for a plain-clothed Hispanic officer, William Lozano, who fatally shot Black motorcyclist Clement Lloyd in 1989 as Lloyd sought to elude a patrol car trying to stop him for a traffic violation. A passenger on the motorcycle, Allan Blanchard, who was also Black, died in the resulting crash. Protests erupted in Miami.

At the 1991 trial in Miami, jurors found Lozano guilty of manslaughter. The appellate ruling months later that overturned the conviction highlighted how some jurors admitted they feared an acquittal would renew protests.

“We simply cannot approve,” the court said, “the result of a trial conducted … in an atmosphere in which the entire community — including the jury — was so obviously (and) justifiably concerned with the dangers which would follow an acquittal.”

At his 1993 retrial in Orlando, more than 200 miles from Miami, Lozano was acquitted.

Numerous people expressed unease about serving on the panel for Chauvin’s trial during the more than two weeks of jury selection. At least one who became teary-eyed was excused, as were others who were visibly unnerved.

Others displayed no such apprehension. A Black man in his 30s who was ultimately put on the jury wrote on a questionnaire that the Chauvin trial was the biggest case of his lifetime. And he added: “I would love to be a part of it.”

Other police-related trials in which race may have played a role tested courts’ ability to reach fair verdicts amid intense public pressure.

The 2018 trial of white Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke in the fatal shooting of Black teenager Laquan McDonald was not moved out of Chicago and ended with guilty verdicts on second-degree murder and aggravated battery.

The 1992 trial of Los Angeles officers charged in the brutal beating of Black motorist Rodney King produced a far more contentious outcome. After months of political wrangling, it was moved to a suburb where a nearly all-white jury acquitted the officers, setting off riots in Los Angeles.

Critics said the venue change didn’t solve issues of impartiality and only resulted in a jury partial to the officers, deepening cynicism by some that justice can ever be fair when the victims are Black.

All the Chauvin jurors were asked before being impaneled if they could set aside outside influences and decide the case only on evidence presented at trial. They all assured the court that they could.

Alan Tuerkheimer, a Chicago-based jury consultant, said he believed the Chauvin jurors would become increasingly calm as the trial proceeds and would be able to block out the hubbub.

“The norm is jurors taking these things very seriously,” he said.

If the Chauvin jury faced an either-or decision on a single murder charge, that would have ratcheted up the pressure on jurors even further, said Steve Greenberg, a leading criminal attorney in Chicago who has tried over 50 murder cases. He said a release valve for them in deliberations is that they can opt to convict on lesser but still-serious charges.

“There is wiggle room that will allow all of them to feel good about their decision at the end of the day,” he said.

Infectious disease expert Dr. Amish Adalja joins ‘Fox News Live’ to discuss the spike in infections, vaccine’s ability to fight coronavirus variants.

A senior fellow at the Atlantic Council called for a substantial, international investigation into the origins of the coronavirus and said the World Health Organization’s inquiry has been dreadfully inadequate.

Jamie Metzl, who has previously served in the National Security Council during the Clinton administration, told CBS’ “60 Minutes” that the WHO’s investigation in Wuhan should actually be referred to as a “highly chaperoned, highly curated study tour.”

“Everybody around the world is imagining this is some kind of full investigation,” he said. “It’s not. This group of experts only saw what the Chinese government wanted them to see.”

The joint WHO-China study on the origins of COVID-19 said transmission of the virus from bats to humans through another animal is the most likely scenario, according to a draft copy obtained by the Associated Press. 

Last month, Peter Daszak, a member of the WHO’s expert team that was dispatched to Wuhan to investigate the pandemic’s origins, said China granted the team full access to all sites, a claim that was immediately met with skepticism.

There have been several theories on what led to Patient Zero. The most widely accepted is that there was a cross-species transmission between animal and human at a wet market in Wuhan. Other theories, which often get written off as fringe in the media, include the possibility that the virus somehow escaped the Wuhan Institute of Virology or that COVID-19 is some kind of Frankenstein bioweapon intentionally released.

Daszak told “60 Minutes” that the organization’s theory is that the virus was transmitted by bat into a wildlife farm.

“And then the animals were shipped into the market,” he said. “And they contaminated people while they were handling them, chopping them up, killing them, whatever you do before you cook an animal.”

He called the theory that it leaked from a lab “extremely unlikely.”

Dr. Robert Redfield, the former head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an interview last week—without providing evidence– that he believes the virus escaped the lab.

“I’m allowed to have opinions now. I am of the point of view, I still think the most likely ideology of this pathogen in Wuhan was from a laboratory, escaped. Other people don’t believe that. That’s fine,” Redfield told CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta. “Science will eventually figure it out. It’s not unusual for respiratory pathogens that are being worked on in a laboratory to infect the laboratory worker.”

Metzl joined more than two dozen experts demanding a new international inquiry into the virus’ origins.

“We would have to ask the question, “Well, why in Wuhan?” To quote Humphrey Bogart, “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, why Wuhan?” What Wuhan does have is China’s level four virology institute, with probably the world’s largest collection of bat viruses, including bat coronaviruses,” he said.

He described the WHO investigation as China essentially collecting its own data and then handing it over to the team. He compared it to tapping the Soviet Union to “do a co-investigation of Chernobyl.”

Former President Trump was a top critic of WHO and what he saw as a cozy relationship with Beijing. In May, Trump announced that the U.S. would terminate its relationship with the health body over its handling of the coronavirus. The U.S. had been the top contributor to the agency to the tune of approximately $450 million a year. China meanwhile pays approximately $50 million a year — although Beijing had recently announced a $2 billion injection of funds.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken was asked by CNN on Sunday if the U.S. would take any punitive action against Beijing over the outbreak.

“The issue for us is to make sure that we do everything possible to prevent another pandemic even as we’re working through this one,” Blinken said. “Or at the very least, to make sure that we can mitigate it in much more effective ways any damage done if something happens in the future.”

China has asked the WHO to investigate other countries to see if the virus could have spread to Wuhan.

The New York Post pointed out that during his confirmation hearing, Blinken agreed that China “misled the world.” He even seemed to cast doubt on the upcoming W.H.O. report on the virus’ origins.

“We have real concerns about the methodology and the process that went into that report, including the fact that the government in Beijing apparently helped to write it,” Blinken said. “But let’s see what comes out in that report.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci on Sunday weighed in on the debate surrounding the origins of COVID-19, saying he believed it adapted “in the wild.”

“It’s entirely conceivable that it was spreading considerably for weeks, if not months, before we recognized it at the end of December, giving it plenty of time to adapt to a human,” Fauci told CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “The other theory that people have is that somehow it did that in a lab and it accidentally escaped.”

“I mean, those are just varying opinions,” he added. “I think the most likely one that in nature, in the wild, it adapted itself.”

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a convicted serial killer whose victims included two young boys has died at a hospital in Indiana.

Joseph Edward Duncan was on federal death row. The 58-year-old had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

He was sentenced to death in 2008 following his conviction for the killing of 9-year-old Dylan Groene and three adults in Idaho.

Following that conviction, Duncan was extradited to Southern California to be tried for the death of 10-year-old Anthony Martinez of Riverside County in 1997.

Duncan pleaded guilty and received a sentence of life in prison.

The massive container ship that is blocking the Suez Canal may have run aground because of human error, not a strong windstorm, Egyptian officials said this weekend.

Initial reports said the 1,300-foot, 200,000-ton Ever Given got wedged in the shipping channel because of high winds and a sandstorm that affected visibility.

But the head of the Suez Canal Authority now says weather conditions were “not the main reasons” for the ship’s grounding.

“There may have been technical or human errors,” the canal authority’s Chairman Osama Rabie told reporters Saturday, without giving more details, the BBC reported.

“All of these factors will become apparent in the investigation.”

Meanwhile, tug boats and dredgers continued working to push and pull the massive ship from the spot where it’s been wedged between the banks of the normally-busy canal since Tuesday.

At least 369 boats are lined up in a massive traffic jam waiting to pass through the canal, which handles up to 15 percent of world trade.

A mass of rock underneath the ship’s bow is making the effort difficult. Dredgers have shifted more than 950,000 cubic feet of sand and dug down nearly 60 feet, but the ship remains stuck.

Still, there are tiny signs of progress, the Suez Canal Authority said.

“The rudder was not moving and it is now moving, the propeller is working now, there was no water underneath the bow, and now there is water under it, and yesterday there was a 4-meter deviation in the bow and the stern,” Rabie told Egyptian state TV.

Video posted on Twitter showed tug boats honking their horns in celebration.

Authorities brought two more powerful tugboats in, bringing the total to 14 tugs working on moving the ship. The backup is costing the canal about $15 million daily.

The Egyptian government also ordered preparations to start offloading some of the ship’s 18,300 containers to lighten its load. That effort wouldn’t start until Monday.

It will require moving the containers either to another ship or possibly the canal bank. Special equipment, including a crane more than 200 feet high, would be needed and the process could take weeks, the BBC reported.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon said Sunday that the blocked canal could also affect the movement of U.S. military vessels.

A Defense Department spokesperson told The Hill the longer the canal is blocked, the greater the concerns.

“The Suez Canal is an essential maritime choke point, and the longer passage is suspended, the more impact it will have to civilian and military transits,” said Navy spokeswoman Rebecca Rebarich.

Experts have warned that with the canal blocked, more ships are likely to try sail around Africa, raising their exposure to pirates, along with increased costs and shipping times.

“[I]f more and more ships are going along the coast of Africa because of this incident, security arrangements would need to be tightened” around areas where piracy is known to occur, especially the waters surrounding Somalia and Yemen, said Paul Sullivan, an international security expert and professor at the National Defense University in an interview with Voice of America.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said the new Republican-backed law in Georgia that places heavy restrictions on voting doesn’t make “sense.” 

A provision of a new law signed last week by Georgia GOP Gov. Brian Kemp puts stricter requirements on providing identification for voters casting absentee ballots, limits the number of drop boxes for ballots, gives state officials more power over how elections are run, and bars volunteers from giving food and water to people waiting in line to vote.

In an interview on “Fox News Sunday” anchor, Chris Wallace asked Graham: “Senator, why on Earth, if Americans are willing to wait for hours to vote would you make it a crime for people to come and give them a bottle of water?

“Well, all I can say is that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me,” the South Carolina Republican responded. “I agree with you there.”

As Insider’s Grace Panetta reported, Section 33 of SB202 says, “No person shall solicit votes in any manner or by any means or method, nor shall any person distribute or display any campaign material, nor shall any person give, offer to give, or participate in the giving of any money or gifts, including, but not limited to, food and drink, to an elector, nor shall any person solicit signatures for any petition, nor shall any person, other than election officials discharging their duties, establish or set up any tables or booths on any day in which ballots are being cast.”

The law was met with criticism from Democrats including President Joe Biden, who referred to the new voting law as “Jim Crow in the 21st Century.” 

In 2020, Biden became the first Democratic presidential candidate to win Georgia since 1991. Democrats in the state saw another major victory when they won Georgia’s Senate runoff elections in January. 

When asked about Republican voting restrictions and shown a clip of Biden calling those efforts  “sick,” and “un-American,” Graham said that Biden used the “race card.”

“You know what’s sick is for the president of the United States to play the race card, continuously, in such a hypocritical way,” Graham said. 

He added: “Every time a Republican does anything we’re a racist. If you’re a white conservative you’re a racist. If you’re a Black Republican, you’re either a prop or Uncle Tom. They use the racism card to advance a liberal agenda and we’re tired of it.

Just days after two teenage girls in Washington, D.C., were charged with a botched carjacking that led to the brutal death of an Uber Eats delivery driver, D.C. police arrested two more teens in another armed carjacking.

The two boys, ages 13 and 14, and both from Southeast D.C., were arrested Thursday evening and charged with armed carjacking, the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department said.

The carjacking occurred Thursday around 8:50 p.m. in the 100 Block of 42nd Street, Northeast, police said.

The victim was in the driver’s seat of their vehicle when two suspects approached. One suspect opened the vehicle door and assaulted the victim, police said. The victim got out and the second suspect also started to assault the victim.

One of the suspects produced a knife and they both got into the victim’s vehicle and fled the scene. Responding officers located the vehicle and arrested the two suspects. Police said there were additional suspects who fled the scene on foot.

MPD told Fox News that the vehicle was returned and towed by the owner. No additional arrests were made and the case is still under investigation.

The boys’ arrest comes after horrifying video has emerged of the deadly botched carjacking by two teenage girls that also took place in D.C. last Monday. The footage is so graphic that Fox News has decided not to share it. 

The video, taken by a witness, shows the moment after two teen girls had entered the car of Mohammad Anwar, a 66-year-old Uber Eats delivery driver, with a Taser.

“This is my car!” Anwar can be heard shouting.

Other witnesses on the street can be heard calling for the cops. The car then drives forward, with Anwar halfway out of the car, pinned between the driver’s seat and door.

“She’s stealing the car!” witnesses can be heard shouting off-camera.

The car drives to an intersection, where it makes a sharp turn and crashes between two parked cars. Anwar was lunged forward and could be seen laying lifelessly on the pavement.

Mohammad Anwar was a Pakistani immigrant who came to the U.S. in 2014 to “create a better life for him and his family,” his family says.

Two National Guard members who happened to be at the scene pulled the girls out of the car. One of the girls can be heard trying to get her phone as she walks past what appears to be Anwar’s lifeless body on the pavement without looking at him.

The two teens are each charged with felony murder and armed carjacking and are being held in custody pending their next court date on March 31.

Carjackings have been increasing significantly over the last few years. Statistics provided to Fox News show there were 95 carjackings between Jan. 1, 2021, and March 23, 2021 – up from 21 in total from the same time period in 2020. Last year saw a 143% increase in carjackings from 2019, according to the statistics.

Miami Beach residents have had enough with spring break partiers taking over their town.

Local demonstrators gathered outside City Hall Saturday to protest against the chaos that another year of spring break partying has brought to the city.

More than 100 people participated in the “Take Back the City” protest, ABC Miami affiliate WPLG reported.

The mayhem has been so bad that the city of Miami Beach declared a state of emergency and enacted an 8 p.m. curfew to keep the spring break crowds from gathering late at night.

The spring break partying has persisted despite the fact that many colleges around the country canceled the traditional week-long holiday due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thousands have been flocking to Miami’s beaches, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said on “Good Morning America” last week.

On March 12 pepper balls were used on a crowd after two officers were injured. Days later, on March 20, they were again used to control crowds as police tried to enforce the curfew.

Dozens of people have been arrested as a result of the revelry.

The protestors this weekend demanded that Gelber and other officials stop the partying ahead of Memorial Day weekend, when more crowds are expected.

Miami Beach resident David McKinney told WPLG the city needs to treat the situation as a public safety issue.

Another demonstrator, political activist Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, told the station that she has been “screaming” about the situation for some time.

“When we get this horrible PR it affects everyone, because people are afraid to come here,” said Gonzalez. “We welcome everyone to Miami Beach, but we want people to stop trashing our city.”

Rising Covid cases can’t be blamed on variants alone as travel resumes, states lift restrictions, Fauci says – CNBC

The latest rise in new Covid-19 infections can’t be pinned on highly transmissible variants alone as more Americans travel for spring break and states lift restrictions, including mask mandates, intended to slow the virus’ spread, White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Sunday.

Following nearly three months of declines, U.S. coronavirus cases are beginning to rebound once again. The country is reporting a weekly average of 61,821 new Covid-19 cases per day, a 12% increase compared with a week ago, according to a CNBC analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

It’s an outcome public health experts, including Fauci, have warned against since late February after daily infections plateaued amid the rise of virus variants threatening to sweep across the U.S. much like they did in Europe.

One variant first identified in the U.K. concerning public health experts, known as B.1.1.7, has been detected in every state except Oklahoma, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s most recent data.

Other highly transmissible variants first found in South Africa and Brazil, dubbed B.1.351 and P.1., respectively, have now been identified in the U.S. The CDC is carefully following another variant found in New York City, called B.1.526, which is also thought to be more transmissible compared with previous strains, the agency’s Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said on Wednesday.

A more transmissible virus could lead to more infections and inevitably hospitalizations and deaths even as the most vulnerable are vaccinated against the disease, experts warn, making the race to vaccinate more people crucial. However, Fauci said the troublesome mutations aren’t the only reason why cases are increasing.

“What we’re likely seeing is because of things like spring break and pulling back on the mitigation methods that you’ve seen. Now, several states have done that,” Fauci told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

“Variants we take seriously and are concerned, but it is not only the variants that are doing that,” he said.

Despite repeated warnings from the Biden administration, some states have forged ahead with reopening their economies, citing an accelerated vaccine rollout and declining cases and hospitalizations as their reasoning.

State officials have lifted capacity restrictions on businesses like gyms and restaurants, while a handful of them have terminated — or plan to eliminate — statewide mask requirements. Millions of Americans, having been cooped up over the past year, are returning to the skies, taking advantage of cheap flights and hotels while they last.

“Even if on the planes people are wearing masks, when you get to the airport, the check-in lines, the food lines for restaurants, the boarding that you see, how people sometimes can be congregating together, those are the kind of things that invariably increase the risk of getting infected,” Fauci said on Sunday.

Other top Biden health officials have warned that now is not the time to ease restrictions. Walensky said during a White House news briefing Friday that she remains “deeply concerned” about the trajectory of the nation’s epidemic.

“We have seen cases and hospital admissions move from historic declines to stagnations and increases. We know from prior surges that if we don’t control things now, there is a real potential for the epidemic curve to soar again,” Walensky said.

A giant container ship remained stuck sideways in Egypt’s Suez Canal for a fifth day Saturday, as authorities prepared to make new attempts to free the vessel and reopen a crucial east-west waterway for global shipping.

The Ever Given’s owners say a gust of wind pushed it and its huge cargo of more than 20,000 shipping containers sideways in the canal on Tuesday, wedging it between the canal’s sandy banks. The massive vessel got stuck in a single-lane stretch of the canal a few miles from its southern entrance.

Plans were in the works to pump water from interior spaces of the vessel, and two more tugs should arrive by Sunday to join others already trying to move the massive ship, it said.

An official at the Suez Canal Authority said they planned to make at least two attempts Saturday to free the vessel when the high tide goes down. 

A maritime traffic jam grew to around 280 vessels Saturday outside the Suez Canal, according to canal service provider Leth Agencies. Some vessels began changing course and dozens of ships were still en route to the waterway, according to the data firm Refinitiv.

Shoei Kisen President Yukito Higaki told a news conference at company headquarters in Imabari in western Japan that 10 tugboats were deployed and workers were dredging the banks and sea floor near the vessel’s bow to try to get it afloat again as the high tide starts to go out.

Shoei Kisen said in a statement Saturday the company was considering removing containers to lighten the vessel if refloating efforts fail, but that would be a difficult operation.

The White House said it has offered to help Egypt reopen the canal. “We have equipment and capacity that most countries don’t have and we’re seeing what we can do and what help we can be,” President Joe Biden told reporters Friday.

A prolonged closure of the crucial waterway would cause delays in the global shipment chain. Some 19,000 vessels passed through the canal last year, according to official figures. About 10% of world trade flows through the canal, which is particularly crucial for transporting oil. The closure could affect oil and gas shipments to Europe from the Middle East.

It remained unclear how long the blockage would last. Even after reopening the canal that links factories in Asia to consumers in Europe, the waiting containers are likely to arrive at busy ports, forcing them to face additional delays before offloading.

Apparently anticipating long delays, the owners of the stuck vessel diverted a sister ship, the Ever Greet, on a course around Africa instead, according to satellite data.

Others also are being diverted. The liquid natural gas carrier Pan Americas changed course in the mid-Atlantic, now aiming south to go around the southern tip of Africa, according to satellite data from MarineTraffic.com. 

The Financial Times reported on Friday that a number of shipping groups had contacted the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet over maritime security concerns for vessels that do chose to sail south around Africa, which would put them in waters off the continent’s eastern coast that have a long history of piracy. 

“Africa has the risk of piracy, especially in east Africa,” Zhao Qing-feng of the China Shipowners’ Association in Shanghai, told the FT, saying owners could need to hire extra security forces to board their vessels before making the extended journey.

It’s just one more factor that could cause a serious slowdown and a potential price-hike for goods moving to Europe and the U.S. from Asia, and one more headache for a global supply-chain system already strained by the coronavirus pandemic.

Egyptian authorities have prohibited media access to the site. The canal authority said its head, Lt. Gen. Osama Rabei, would hold a news conference Saturday in the city of Suez, a few kilometers (miles) from the site of the vessel.

Police and soldiers reportedly killed dozens of people, including children, across Myanmar on Saturday, as the military celebrated the 76th annual Armed Forces Day in the capital with a parade. 

The online news site Myanmar Now reported late Saturday that the death toll had reached 114, according to The Associated Press. A count issued by an independent researcher in Yangon who has been compiling near-real time death tolls put the total at 107, spread over more than two dozen cities and towns.  

A previous high for estimated deaths in a single day stood between 74 and 90 on March 14, the AP reported.

Myanmar Now also reported dozens of injuries, including a 1-year-old baby in Thamin, Yangon, who was reportedly shot in the eye with a rubber bullet. The baby was playing near the armed forces when they were shot, according to Myanmar Now. Another local outlet, The Irrawaddy, said the death toll, which it reported was at least 59, included four children, ages 5, 10, 13 and 15. CBS News has not independently confirmed how many people were killed. 

Thousands of people on Saturday were protesting the military’s takeover. Students, monks, nuns, health care workers and educators have all taken part in demonstrations to demand a return to the path toward democracy since the military junta seized control in early February. 

Secretary of state Antony Blinken tweeted on Saturday that the U.S. is “horrified by the bloodshed perpetrated by Burmese security forces, showing that the junta will sacrifice the lives of the people to serve the few.”

The chiefs of defense of the U.S., Australia, Canada, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Kingdom of Denmark, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and the U.K. also issued a statement condemning the violence. 

The European Union Delegation to Myanmar tweeted that Saturday “will stay engraved as a day of terror and dishonour.” 

“The killing of unarmed civilians, including children, are indefensible acts,” the delegation tweeted.

Thomas Vajda, the U.S. ambassador to Myanmar, condemned Saturday’s killings and called for an “immediate end to the violence and the restoration of the democratically elected government.” 

“On Myanmar’s Armed Forces Day, security forces are murdering unarmed civilians, including children, the very people they swore to protect,” Vajda said. “This bloodshed is horrifying. These are not the actions of a professional military or police force.” 

The United Nations in Myanmar said it is horrified by the “needless loss of life,” and said Saturday marks the “bloodiest day since the coup.” 

“The violence is completely unacceptable and must stop immediately,” the UN said. “Those responsible must be held to account.”

As of Friday, 328 people had been killed in the crackdown since the coup, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, a monitoring group based in Thailand. On Tuesday, a 7-year-old girl was shot and killed by government security forces as she was running to her father when the military kicked in the door to their home, her family said. 

UNICEF reported Wednesday that at least 23 children have been killed since the crisis started.

Former President Donald Trump blasted Joe Biden‘s immigration policies Saturday on “Justice with Judge Jeanine,” saying the new President is showing “no leadership,” during a crisis that could “destroy our country.”  

DONALD TRUMP: Thousands and thousands of people are coming up right now as we speak. And you’re going to have millions of people pouring into our country. And it’s going to destroy our country. I don’t know what they’re doing. And they don’t know what they’re doing.  It’s a very, very dangerous situation. I’d love not to be involved. Somebody else is supposed to be doing it.

Over the next few weeks, I guess I’ll go [to the border]. And I’m not sure that I really should do it, Jeanine, other than the fact that I have such respect for the Border Patrol and for ICE. And these people they’re dying for leadership. There’s nothing. There’s no leadership. You have to see the squalor, the children and, frankly, people that have come in to the country when you look at what’s happening, the dirt and the filth of those places. That’s why they’re not letting the press in. 

And, frankly, if that were me the press would be going crazy. It’s a very dangerous situation. It’s horrible for our country.  They’re going to destroy our country.  

Since taking office, Biden has undone a number of Trump-era immigration policies, including halting funding for the border wall and ending the Remain-in-Mexico policy. 

The Trump administration set up and expanded MPP during the 2019 migrant crisis as part of a broader agreement with Mexico, and hailed it as a key plank in its efforts to end “catch-and-release” — by which migrants were released into the interior of the U.S.

Instead, MPP keeps migrants in Mexico as they await their asylum hearings. Proponents say the policy ended a key pull factor that brought migrants north, while critics say it is cruel and puts migrants in danger by leaving them in Mexico.

Meanwhile, the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facilities have been operating far beyond capacity amid a troubling surge in border crossers. The agency announced that it had encountered more than 100,000 migrants at the border in February, while numbers of child migrants in custody have also increased dramatically.

The Biden administration has refrained from calling the situation a “crisis,” but has admitted that border apprehension numbers could surge to a 20-year high.
