National Rifle Association President Oliver North said Saturday that he won’t serve a second term as the leader of the gun-rights group.

The resignation appears to be the culmination of an internal power struggle among the leadership that has recently engulfed the group, which reached a crescendo on Friday when the NRA’s executive vice president Wayne LaPierre, the effective public face of the organization, accused North of pressuring him to resign.

In a letter read out by a board member Saturday, North said: “Please know I hoped to be with you today as NRA president endorsed for reelection. I’m now informed that that will not happen.”

He said that the NRA should form a committee to probe the group’s finances, adding that it represents a “clear crisis” that “needs to be dealt with” if the organization wants to remain a viable organization.

In a separate letter dated Thursday to NRA board members, LaPierre said North asked him to resign on Wednesday. North told LaPierre the NRA’s longtime advertising firm, Ackerman McQueen, planned to send a letter to the board through North that would be “bad for me” unless he resigned.

“Yesterday evening, I was forced to confront one of those defining choices — styled, in the parlance of extortionists — as an offer I couldn’t refuse,” the letter, which was obtained by the Wall Street Journal, read. “I refused it.”

He added that North said “the letter would not be sent — if I were to abruptly resign,” noting that “He stated that he could ‘negotiate’ an ‘excellent retirement’ for me.”

The Daily Beast reported Saturday that the organization had also suspended its top lawyer, Steve Hart, although it was not immediately clear why. Meanwhile, NPR reported that the organization’s membership opposed an executive session of the meeting and a secret session without the media present.

A lawsuit filed by the NRA against Ackerman last month claims the company overbilled the group and that North had a conflict of interest because Ackerman paid him.

LaPierre accused North of having “contractual and financial loyalties” to Ackerman in addition to his criticism that the NRA’s messaging has moved too far from the original mission of gun safety and the outdoors.

“As you know, the NRA. has over this past year taken steps to strengthen its efforts to document and verify compliance by our vendors with our purchasing practices and their contracts,” LaPierre wrote in his letter on Thursday to the board. “We’ve met extraordinary resistance from one vendor — Ackerman McQueen.”

North’s reign at the organization lasted less than a year and shows the NRA’s internal support for LaPierre who became a symbol of gun-rights movement in the U.S. after being the public face of the group and its policies for decades.

“Wayne has the confidence of a strong majority of the board,” Todd Rathner, a board member from Arizona, told the Associated Press.

“They trust him. They know that he’s the face of the NRA. And quite frankly I think that anybody that wants to remove him, they’re going to have to get through this board first.”

The turmoil in the organization played out as it held its 148th annual conference in Indianapolis, with President Trump headlining the convention Friday and promising to protect gun rights in the 2020 elections and oppose gun-control efforts by Democrats.

SAINTHAMARUTHU, Sri Lanka — They arrived a day or two after the Easter Sunday bombings and moved into a low-slung house behind a high wall and black metal gate, unloading boxes from a pale gray minivan.

But the neighbors in the seaside town of Sainthamaruthu soon began to suspect that something wasn’t right. Finally, a group of local residents asked the new arrivals — men, women and children — to leave town.

Within hours, the quiet lane was turned into a war zone.

On Friday, at least 15 people, including six children, were killed in bomb blasts and gunfire as Sri Lankan security forces closed in on the house.

Police believe the fiery explosions were triggered deliberately — the final violent acts of a group whose hideout had bombmaking items and black backpacks. Their preparations pointed to just one thing: possible plans for the next steps in a campaign of terror that began April 21 with bombings at churches that claimed more than 250 lives.

The identities of those killed in Sainthamaruthu were not immediately known or released. On Saturday, after the chaos, crime scene personnel in fluorescent vests roamed the area around the home collecting metal pellets, torn pieces of clothing and fragments of flesh.

The confrontation on Sri Lanka’s eastern shore — on the other side of the island from the capital, Colombo — came amid a nationwide security crackdown and searches for suspects across the country. Police have deployed new emergency powers to stop and question individuals and to conduct raids.

But the events that flushed out the suspects in Friday’s raids involved something simpler: neighborhood intuition.

It began when Imam Lateef, 54, the vice-chairman of the nearby Hijra Mosque, received a call from the landlord who had rented the home to the group. The landlord was worried about the people in the house. Their behavior was suspicious, Lateef said, and the landlord wanted them to leave.

Lateef and several other members of the mosque walked over to the house, along a canal crowded with lotus plants.

The man who answered the door said that the family was from Kattankudy, the hometown of Zahran Hashim, the mastermind of the attacks, and the base of National Thowheed Jamaath, the Islamist extremist group Hashim founded. The mosque delegation politely asked them to leave by the following day.

Meanwhile, after Friday prayers, Mohammed Rizwan, a local shopkeeper, was chatting with a group of friends about the new arrivals. They had heard they were from Kattankudy and resolved to check them out.

When Rizwan went by in the early evening Friday, he said that a man at the house told him to get out and pointed a gun at his chest. Rizwan took off running, grabbing the nearest police officer he could find — a local traffic cop.

Minutes later, the first blast shook the house.

A second blast followed. Then a third. But this time, special police units and soldiers were on the scene.

The blasts blew a hole in the roof and wall of the house, sending tiles flying. The security forces exchanged gunfire with a man carrying an AK-47 rifle. He was shot dead.

Amid the confusion, security forces also shot at three people in an auto-rickshaw that failed to heed warnings to stop, injuring two and killing one. It turned out the trio had no connection to the house or the attacks.

Earlier on Friday, police had raided a house about three miles from the rented home. There they found a cache of explosives, police said, plus the clothing and flag used by the Easter Sunday bombers to record a video professing allegiance to the Islamic State.

When the authorities entered the home in Sainthamaruthu at dawn on Saturday, they found the charred bodies of children in a corner of the room. They also discovered two survivors. An injured woman and toddler were taken to the hospital.

The evidence left behind was chilling. The home contained bombmaking equipment, including detonators, wires, plastic tubes for explosives and three identical, brand-new black backpacks.

Outside, the body of the man shot by the security forces — identified only as “Niyaz” by a local police official — still lay face down on the cobbled pavement as flies buzzed around the corpse. Ripped pieces of clothing were scattered on the ground together with bullet casings. Torn sheaves of paper with the hadith — the sayings of the prophet Muhammad — were strewn in two places.

In the still, humid air, crime scene personnel climbed ladders and began to scour the house’s roof for evidence. Meanwhile, police officers took two white plastic sheets and created a makeshift body bag, hoisting a corpse into the back of a navy blue police truck.

Nearby, hundreds of local residents had spent the morning sheltering at a school while they waited to be able to return to their homes. The entire town of Sainthamuruthu was under a curfew, with all roads closed and all shops shuttered.

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena said Friday that strict new measures were being taken to identify and track people, similar to hard-line methods used during the civil war between separatist ethnic Tamils and the government that ended in 2009.

He said that about 70 individuals suspected of ties to the Islamic State had been arrested, and that another 70 suspects were still at large. On Saturday, the National Thowheed Jamaath, the Islamist extremist group linked to the Easter attacks, was banned.

“We had to declare an emergency situation to suppress terrorists and ensure a peaceful environment in the country,” the president said. “Every household in the country will be checked” and lists of all residents made to “ensure that no unknown person can live anywhere.”

Rizwan, the shopkeeper, expressed a sense of pride at his actions a day earlier.

“I feel like I did a brave thing when I went to see what was happening,” he said. Perhaps, he added, this would mark the end of the terror that has stalked Sri Lanka in recent days.

“We hope it’s over,” he said. “But we don’t know.”

NRA President Oliver North stepping down as infighting roils the gun-rights group – NBC News

A contentious public infight within the National Rifle Association came to a head on Saturday with the organization’s president, retired Lt. Col. Oliver North, announcing that he will not return for a second term.

North had intended to make an appearance at the organization’s national convention in Indianapolis over the weekend, but instead of attending, Richard Childress, who serves as one of the NRA’s current vice presidents, read a letter on his behalf.

“Please note, I hoped to be with you today as interim president endorsed for reelection. I’m now informed that will now not happen,” Childress read to a convention hall full of NRA members. “I’ve been on the NRA board for more than two decades, it was a great privilege to serve as your president this past year.”

North’s departure comes amid a heated battle with Wayne LaPierre, chief executive officer and the longtime spiritual leader of the NRA. North reportedly asked LaPierre to resign from his post earlier this week as the organization faces challenges surrounding fundraising and its nonprofit status, the New York Times reported.

The organization’s 2016 election spending, including $36 million to help Trump, has prompted regulators in its charter base of New York state to threaten to investigate its nonprofit status.

North told organization brass that he created a committee to investigate possible financial improprieties committed by the organization, the Times reported. North also sent a letter to the board with allegations that LePierre charged a vendor more than $200,000 on wardrobe purchases, according to The Wall Street Journal.

In response, LePierre sent a letter to the NRA board alleging he was being extorted and pressured by North, who threatened to release “damaging” information about him if he did not resign, according to the Journal. LaPierre said he refused and called on board members to “see this for what it is: a threat meant to intimidate and divide us.”

The dispute between the two NRA titans was triggered in part after the organization filed a lawsuit against advertising firm Ackerman McQueen, alleging the agency was not being transparent with how it used NRA money, according to the Journal. The NRA paid Ackerman McQueen $42.6 million in 2017, making it the group’s largest vendor, the Journal reported.

The lawsuit is also connected to a looming investigation by New York state regulators seeking to re-examine the NRA’s tax exemption status as a non-profit.

North, who accepted a “salaried position” with Ackerman McQueen, said that the lawsuit was filed without notice to the board, according to the letter read by Childress.

LaPierre alleged that North has “contractual and financial loyalties” to Ackerman McQueen and was, therefore, protecting them, according to the Journal.

North, a central figure in the Iran-Contra scandal, was selected last year to be the NRA’s president and his term will end on Monday.

The 76 member NRA board will face pressing decisions when it meets on Monday.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., said this week that she does not support launching impeachment hearings against President Trump in the wake of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report — the latest wrinkle in left-wing Democrats’ plans to oust the president.

The Arizona Republic asked Sinema, who won a tight race in the traditionally Republican state in November, whether she supported impeachment proceedings.

SCHIFF HEDGES ON TRUMP IMPEACHMENT, SAYS INSTEAD, ‘VOTE HIS A– OUT OF OFFICE’

“No,” she responded. When asked why, she said: “Everyone knows.”

Sinema will receive a classified version of the report next week, and she said that she wants to “read all the information I can get before making a determination” on her views of Mueller’s findings.

While investigators effectively cleared the president and his associates on the question of collusion with the Russian government, it outlined a series of actions investigated as part of the obstruction-of-justice inquiry — although it did not make a determination on the question.

Democrats have demanded access to the full unredacted report and called on Mueller to testify, but some left-wing Democrats in the House and in the 2020 field have called for the House to begin impeachment proceedings.

“We cannot be an America that says it is OK for a president of the United States to try and block an investigation into a foreign attack on our country or an investigation into that president’s own misbehavior — so I have called on the House to initiate impeachment proceedings,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said in New Hampshire last week.

In justifying her call, she said that there are “three big toplines [from the Mueller report] that are inescapable.”

“A hostile foreign government attacked our 2016 election in order to help Donald Trump; Donald Trump welcomed that help; and when the federal government tried to investigate what happened, Donald Trump took multiple steps to try and derail or obstruct the investigations,” she said.

MUELLER REPORT IGNITES NEW DEM BATTLE OVER IMPEACHMENT

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., said Monday that she believes Congress “should take the steps toward impeachment,” although she noted the difficulties such a push would face getting through the Republican-controlled Senate.

In the House, the push has picked up the support from left-wing freshman Democrats. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., who said in January that she wanted to “impeach the motherf—-r,” has introduced a resolution urging the House Judiciary Committee to probe whether Trump committed impeachment-level offenses. That resolution has been signed onto by fellow freshman Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

But not only would impeachment be a tough sell to Republicans, it has been opposed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who said last month: “I’m not for impeachment.”

“Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country,” she told The Washington Post. “And he’s just not worth it.”

White House approves official’s testimony after contempt threat – The Washington Post

The Trump administration has agreed to allow a former White House personnel security director, who House Democrats threatened with contempt, to testify on May 1 — a de-escalation move after President Trump said he would ignore “all the subpoenas.”

White House counsel Pat A. Cipollone sent a letter Friday to Rep. Jim Jordan (Ohio), the ranking Republican on the House Oversight Committee, saying that Carl Kline, the former White House personnel security director, would answer questions for the panel’s investigation of security clearance issues in an on-the-record interview next week.

The White House had blocked Kline from showing up for a subpoenaed deposition earlier this week, leading Chairman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) to announce that he’d hold Kline in contempt for ignoring a compulsory Hill summons.

Cipollone’s offer is unlikely to mollify panel Democrats: He said the scope of the interview would be limited to “policy and practices” of the security clearance office.

But Democrats have already received broad briefings on office practices. They want to grill Kline on specific decisions he made to grant security clearances to several top Trump officials after his subordinates raised red flags about their qualifications.

A whistleblower from his office, Tricia Newbold, told the committee she and her team counted at least 25 situations over the past year in what she viewed as unmerited approvals that were granted despite concerns about blackmail or other exposures.

One of those individuals was Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who serves as a senior adviser to the president.

Newbold said Kline and the office’s practices under the Trump administration had potentially put the nation’s most guarded secrets at risk.

Kline no longer works in the security office.

“Mr. Kline has been, and remains, willing to cooperate voluntarily on whatever terms can be agreed on,” said Robert Driscoll, Kline’s lawyer. “I’m sure this won’t be the end of the matter, but . . . wherever we can helpful, we will be.”

The White House’s relent on the matter came after Jordan on Friday made a personal plea for Kline’s appearance, an unusual move for one of Trump’s fiercest defenders on the Hill. Republicans last Congress had joined Democrats in wanting to investigate the matter, but since Democrats took the majority, Cummings and Jordan have locked horns near constantly.

But a Republican aide familiar with Jordan’s thinking said he was hoping to de-escalate the rising standoff between House Democrats and the White House. This week alone, after all, Trump officials blocked or announced they would block subpoenaed individuals from cooperating with House investigations.

Should such a precedent stand, future administrations could do the same thing.

Even as Jordan moved to play a mediator role between the two sides, he blamed Cummings for the situation, not the Trump White House. He has noted that Kline had agreed to appear voluntarily before he was subpoenaed and accused Democrats of an “orchestrated inter-branch confrontation.”
